Natural Selections

Natural Selections Cafe

To be upfront, I eat meat. Hefner and Charlie eat meat. But what good is a doggie food blog if you only eat the things you know you like? That’s why I decided to try Natural Selections Cafe, an all-vegan café on Bull Street in Savannah.

Natural Selections

Charlie and Hefner weren’t sure about trying vegan food

My mother grew up on a farm, so I am no stranger to being force-fed vegetables. Since I even like some of them, I thought I might be able to tolerate vegan fare. I had just one worry: cheese. In my experience, vegan cheese doesn’t hold a candle to the real thing, but I was willing to give it another try.

Natural Selections

The menu at Natural Selections has quite a few choices (and the tables outside are pretty cool, too)

The menu at Natural Selections offers a large selection of breakfast items (made with something called VeganEgg), as well as salads, sandwiches, soups, sides, and desserts. They also have a spaghetti special that is featured on Wednesday but remains on the menu the rest of the week as well. Natural Selections has other daily specials that change from week to week. A couple I’ve seen are tacos, Salisbury steak(less) with mushroom gravy, Philly cheese (not) steak sandwich, and a (not) chicken alfredo.

I checked with the restaurant before I visited, and dogs are welcome at the outside seating along the sidewalk. Customers order at a counter inside (where dogs aren’t allowed), but I was able to wave a server out to take my order while I sat with the dogs. She seemed happy to oblige and my food arrived quickly.

Natural Selections

Some very tasty strawberry lemonade

Natural Selections doesn’t serve any alcohol (isn’t that mostly made from veggies?), but their menu boasts fresh juice squeezed daily. On this visit, I ordered the strawberry lemonade, which was very good. Natural Selections also offers coffee, plant-based milks, water, and tea as beverage selections.

Natural Selections

The black-eyed pea burger and the “mac and cheez”

For my meal, I ordered the black-eyed pea burger with a side of “mac and cheez”. Black-eyed peas are one of the vegetables I will always eat, and this patty was no disappointment. There was also a remoulade-type sauce on the sandwich that was really good, but I don’t actually know what it was made of, since remoulade is made with mayonnaise, and therefore, eggs. It added a nice kick to the tasty of the sandwich, though.

Where I ran into trouble was the “mac and cheez”. I would consider macaroni and cheese my favorite food, so I had to try it. However, my previous encounters with vegan cheese made me a little wary, as it turned out I had a right to be. This version of the pasta dish was fairly tasteless, and there was a gummy plastic quality to the pasta and “cheese” that I couldn’t really stomach. It confirmed my desire to avoid cheese substitutes.

Natural Selections

There was too much activity for the dogs to settle down

Natural Selections is a fairly new establishment in a growing area of  Bull Street that gets a good bit of traffic. On our way to the café, we were stopped by the man working in the olive oil store a couple of doors down, who offered the dogs a treat. Hefner and Charlie were happy to accept the offer.

However, once we got to the restaurant, the dogs wouldn’t settle down. Cars were constantly whizzing past, school children loitered at other tables, and a large number of dogs walked by with their owners (which Hefner and Charlie enjoyed, of course). This activity made it difficult for me to eat my food and keep the dogs nearby, so I finally gave up and took the leftovers home.

Natural Selections

My leftovers all packed up

Vegan students, take note: Natural Selections offers a 10% discount with your student ID (a benefit that I forgot to take advantage of). They also offer online and phone ordering, in case you’re in a hurry and just need to drop in and pick up your food.

Natural Selections is a good addition to the vast food landscape in Savannah. If you love animals, but don’t want to eat them, Natural Selections could be the place you’re looking for.

Green Fire Pizza: Kinda Confusing Name, But The Dogs Didn’t Even Notice

Green Fire Pizza

Green Fire Pizza

Time for some pizza!

Hefner and Charlie demanded it, and so here we are, eating pizza again (I always blame my excessive pizza consumption on the dogs). This time, we visited Green Fire Pizza, a recently-opened restaurant on Drayton Street in the downtown historic district of Savannah.

Green Fire Pizza

Green Fire Pizza and Woofgang Bakery (and some of the construction nearby)

What is green fire? I didn’t know either, so I asked the guy behind the counter, who turned out to be the owner’s son, as I was ordering:

  • Green = organic, fresh ingredients
  • Fire = they cook the pizza in a wood-fire oven

Seems simple enough.

Green Fire Pizza is located in a bit of a difficult area, right next to a large construction zone. When I visited on a Friday afternoon, I didn’t hear any noise coming from the skeletal structures nearby, but I also noticed some construction workers leaving as we were walking up, so we might have arrived after quitting time.

Green Fire Pizza

Hotel construction going on next door, but it wasn’t noisy when we visited

Also, be aware that there is very limited parking in the immediate area of Green Fire. The dogs and I don’t mind a bit of a walk (mostly to take care of that awkward pooping situation Hefner has going on before we get there), so we parked several blocks away and ambled on in. It’s getting hot in Savannah, so as long as we were in the shade, it was fine.

Green Fire Pizza

Hey, you got any pizza up here?

At Green Fire, customers have to go inside and order at a counter, while all the seating is outside on the patio (there is no place to dine indoors). This might be a little difficult to handle on the hot summer days that have already arrived in Savannah, but the dining area is mostly either under the ceiling fan-equipped roof of the patio or furnished with shady umbrellas.

Green Fire Pizza

Hefner wasn’t so sure about the dog statues next to the door

Green Fire Pizza shares a building with one branch of the Woofgang Bakery, and both establishments are very dog-friendly. I was worried about taking the dogs into the actual restaurant to order, but Green Fire was very welcoming and even gave me some Woofgang treats to give the dogs while we waited on our pizza.

Green Fire Pizza

Customers order inside at the counter

Green Fire has a large menu of interesting specialty pizza options ($15.95-$17.95 for a 12″, $19.95-21.95 for a 16″), including one with a tequila cream sauce that I’m not sure if I’m scared of or not. The menu also includes salads, build-your-own frittatas, and a breakfast pizza and a dessert pizza. They sell cheese pizza by the slice ($3), which you can add toppings to for an additional cost. Green Fire also offers gluten-free pizza options and vegan cheese.

Green Fire Pizza

The Quattro Stagioni

The pizza I ordered on this trip was the Quattro Stagioni, which has fresh mozzarella and their fresh plum tomato sauce, mushrooms, baby artichokes, Kalamata olives, and prosciutto. It took a while to get out to me, which I discovered was because they were short-staffed at the time and my first pizza had hung out with the fire for a little too long. They quickly made me another one, though. It was quite tasty and worth the wait.

Green Fire Pizza

Charlie had his eyes on a slice

Green Fire doesn’t have any liquor on their alcohol menu, but they do offer some wines and beers. Drinks are bought at the counter with the pizza, so an additional drink requires another trip inside. But hey, that’s where the air conditioning is.

Green Fire Pizza

Where’s our pizza crusts?

The dogs loved coming to Green Fire Pizza, and it wasn’t just because of the crusts I shared. Everyone was very welcoming to the dogs, including the customers that were there (most had never seen a puggle before). As I said, the people from Green Fire gave them some treats, and then a Woofgang employee walked through and gave them a couple more, along with some rubs. After we finished eating, we decided to go into Woofgang, where they received a few more free treats (and I bought a bunch to take home for later, too).

Green Fire Pizza

Picking out treats at Woofgang Bakery next door

Green Fire Pizza is a great addition to the gourmet pizza selections around Savannah. The dogs and I will definitely be returning soon…maybe for the Tequila Pie? I just have to make sure my liver is ready.

I’m Not Trying to Steal Your Kid: Charlie, the Child-Magnet

Charlie

Charlie and my old cat, Fred

Children love Charlie. Like, obsessive love at first sight. As soon as kids see him, they break away from their parents and throw their arms around him like he’s their long-lost grandmother. Meanwhile, the parents look at me like I’m the Willie Wonka of dog-obsessed kids and I’m trying to lure their children to my chocolate factory. Or maybe that’s what I see and I’m just paranoid because I watch a lot of Law & Order: SVU.

Charlie is never super excited to encounter strangers. I don’t know a lot about his past before I adopted him, but it seems like something bad happened. Strangers, especially adult male strangers, send him running behind my legs, his nose in my hand like it’s a security blanket. He still flinches when I have a newspaper or hanger in my hand, like he’s having a flashback to a traumatic event. He’s very wary of almost any new people who want to interact with him.

Charlie

Charlie

However, Charlie’s so cute and fluffy, children apparently have this overwhelming urge to hug him. Although Hefner is the more outgoing one of the two dogs, children are just drawn to Charlie. I always call him “Mommy’s teddy bear,” so I guess that’s how children see him, too. Charlie usually seems unsure of how to deal with the attention from children, but he accepts it without protest.

Charlie has a completely different reaction when strange adults try to pet him. If someone over the age of 18 reaches out a hand, he backs away and avoids the touch with some kind of gymnastic maneuver that rivals Neo dodging bullets in The Matrix. But let a 6-year-old do that, and he sits there and stares awkwardly at me like he’s not sure what to do.

Charlie

Charlie has never been sure of cats

When I first met Charlie, I was volunteering with the Humane Society in Tupelo, Mississippi, and a family with three young children seemed intent on adopting him that day (they ultimately didn’t end up taking him home). All three children were climbing on him, pulling on his tail, and grabbing handfuls of his auburn locks. Through it all, he just laid there and looked at them, sniffing at them occasionally. I understood then that even though Charlie had had a rough life so far, he still had a heart for children.

Charlie

Charlie

That doesn’t mean that Charlie’s child magnetism doesn’t create for some awkward situations for me. I know there are people out there who have nefarious purposes for their dogs, but I use my canine power for good. However, sometimes I still feel like parents look at me as if I’m driving a windowless van (I guess this one would look like the doggie transport van from Dumb and Dumber), shooting bags of candy out t-shirt cannon-style.

The good thing for Charlie in these situations is that it opens him up a little and gets him used to meeting more people. I feel like an un-socialized dog is not a happy dog, and I want Charlie to be happy. And he seems to make the children happy, just by being him.

Charlie

More than anything, Charlie loves his mommy

But parents, don’t worry: you can keep your kids.

Tubby’s Tankhouse Thunderbolt: Fishing for a Waitress

Tubby’s Tankhouse Thunderbolt

Tubby's Tankhouse

When you live close to both a large river and the ocean, fresh seafood becomes a staple in your diet. I have had good fresh seafood before, mostly when I visit the beach, but this is the first time I feel like I can trust the quality seafood local to my home.

Tubby's Tankhouse

Tubby’s Tankhouse has two locations in the Savannah area, one on River Street and one in Thunderbolt, a town on the river at the eastern edge of Savannah. We decided to visit the Thunderbolt location, mainly to stay away from all the touristy spots on River Street. The location in Thunderbolt has an outdoor patio for dog-friendly dining, and offers live music on some nights.

Tubby's Tankhouse

Hefner and Charlie enjoyed the breeze on the patio by the river

Once the dogs and I arrived in Thunderbolt, we discovered the patio area at Tubby’s Tankhouse is first-come, first-serve. In other words, there was no list on which to put your name. The dogs and I were relegated to sitting on a bench to the side, waiting to swoop in like vultures on the first abandoned table. In the meantime, I procured a beer from the outside bar.

Tubby's Tankhouse

The view from the patio

After only about five minutes of waiting, a group of diners exited, leaving us with a high-top table. While I enjoy sitting at taller tables, it creates issues when dining with canines. Hefner and Charlie kept wanting to run around and sniff everyone’s food, as they felt they were just sitting out in the open in the middle of the patio anyway.

The patio at Tubby’s Tankhouse is wooden, surrounding a large tree planted in the center and sprouting through the deck and roof. Though we were sitting as such a tall table, the waitresses seemed to have no problem ignoring our presence. Finally, we were able to flag someone down for some menus.

Tubby's Tankhouse

The cocktail menu

After we ordered drinks, a low-top table with rocking chairs for seating opened up next to the rail, and the dogs and I were able to relocate to more agreeable accommodations. There is a wooden bench all the way around the patio, which provides a good place to tie the leashes. However, you should still be watchful of sudden dog movement, as the tables aren’t too sturdy and rogue dog could tip over drinks (party foul).

Savannah River

Fresh seafood can be found right across the street

There were several signature drinks on the menu, though I was warned by the bartender that “nothing frozen” would be an option, as the machine was broken. Tubby’s Tankhouse also has a decent list of beers (both on tap and in a bottle/can) and wines, and Happy Hour prices are in effect from 4-7 every day.

Tubby's Tankhouse

Tankhouse Cooler

Tubby’s Tankhouse seems to be sponsored by Dixie Southern vodka from Charleston, as many of their drinks featured the spirit. I was most intrigued by the “Tankhouse Cooler” ($7), which included Dixie vodka and different fruit juices. It was refreshing, but there was nothing particularly special about it.

Tubby's Tankhouse

The bacon-wrapped scallops

The menu mentioned that the bacon-wrapped scallops ($11.99) are a “Tubby’s Original,” and I’m pretty sure I’ve never met a strip of bacon I haven’t liked, so I ordered them. They came with a spicy Thai peanut sauce that they didn’t really need. However, they were pretty tasty, and the dogs enjoyed the bits of bacon I offered.

Tubby's Tankhouse

The menu

The Tubby’s Tankhouse menu has a large selection of appetizers, salads, soups (including “Thunderbolt’s best chili bowl” and “award-winning crab stew”), sandwiches, and seafood and steak entrees. Be aware that some items are “market price,” so it isn’t always easy to stay on a budget here.

Tubby's Tankhouse

The salad bowl with a generous portion of salmon on top

On our visit, the fish specials included red snapper, yellowfin tuna, and salmon (all market price). I decided to order the grilled fresh fish salad bowl with salmon (market price, which turned out to be $14.99). It comes in a tortilla bowl with a creamy horseradish dressing. The salad was good, but I’m not sure there was any of the dressing on there. By the time I saw the waitress again to ask for some, I was almost done with my food.

Tubby's Tankhouse

Begging for some bacon, probably

The dogs seemed to enjoy Tubby’s Tankhouse, because there were plenty of people to pet them and show them attention. We noticed one other dog on the patio, but he wasn’t in our same area. Be aware, the tables on the patio are pretty close together, so it can be hard to keep dogs contained in your own table area. If you don’t mind the slow service, the patio is a good dog-friendly option for enjoying that fresh catch.
